What is the P0011 purpose code?

Purpose code P0011 is used when money comes back to India as repayment of a loan an Indian lender previously extended to a non-resident. This is the return leg of an outward loan, covering the principal being repaid in part or in full, whether on schedule or ahead of it. The split that matters most here is between principal and interest: the principal coming back is a capital account receipt under this code, while interest earned on the loan is investment income and reports under the income codes instead. Under RBI FEMA guidelines, this inward payment is classified under Capital Account and reported accordingly.

When to use P0011 purpose code?

Use P0011 when a non-resident borrower repays principal on a loan you extended from India, whether that borrower is an overseas company, an overseas arm of your own business, or an individual. It is the correct RBI receipt code for money returning as loan repayment rather than as investment proceeds. Lending from India to a non-resident is only permitted under specific FEMA routes, so the route the original loan was made under governs how the repayment is treated and should be confirmed before the money moves.

When to use a different code:

  • Use P0001 when the payment is repatriation of Indian investment abroad in equity capital (shares)
  • Use P0002 when the payment is repatriation of Indian investment abroad in debt securities
  • Use the matching S-code when you are sending money abroad rather than receiving money

Who typically uses P0011 purpose code

Indian companies receiving repayment from an overseas subsidiary or group entity they lent to, and resident individuals receiving repayment of a permitted loan made to a non-resident. It applies to whoever made the original loan from India, whether that was an individual or a registered company.

Examples of transactions covered under P0011 purpose code

  • Scheduled principal repayment from an overseas subsidiary on a loan from its Indian parent
  • Full settlement of a loan by a non-resident borrower ahead of its maturity date
  • Instalment received from an overseas group entity against a loan advanced from India
  • Repayment received by a resident individual on a permitted loan made to a non-resident

When NOT to use P0011 purpose code

  • The money is interest earned on the loan rather than repayment of principal (use the income codes for investment income)
  • The payment is repatriation of Indian investment abroad in equity capital or shares (use P0001)
  • The payment is proceeds from debt securities you held rather than repayment of a loan you advanced (use P0002)
  • You are sending money abroad rather than receiving (use the matching S-code)

Documents required for P0011 purpose code

To receive a payment under P0011, keep the following documents ready so your bank can verify the transaction and report it correctly under FEMA.

DocumentPurpose
Loan agreement with the non-resident borrower - Sets out the principal advanced, the repayment schedule, and the termsRecord of the original outward remittance - Links the money coming back to the loan originally advanced from India
Purpose declaration form - The inward remittance form where the purpose of funds is formally statedKYC documents (if requested) - Used to verify your identity during onboarding or compliance checks

How is a P0011 Purpose Code declared?

Declaring the code is pretty straightforward. Here's how the payment gets tagged and reported.

  1. Confirm what is being repaid: Separate the principal from any interest, since only the principal belongs under this code.
  2. Receive the repayment: The non-resident borrower remits the money into your Indian bank account.
  3. Declare the purpose: State the purpose of the inward remittance on your bank's form.
  4. Submit supporting documents: Provide the loan agreement, proof of the original advance, and KYC so the bank can verify the transaction.
  5. Get your FIRA: Once processed, your FIRA is issued as proof and the payment is reported under FEMA.

Common mistakes to avoid while using P0011 purpose code

A few common slips can hold up your payment or cause compliance issues. Here's what to watch for.

  1. Coding principal and interest together: Tagging the whole repayment under P0011 when part of it is interest, which is investment income and reports separately.
  2. Tagging investment proceeds as loan repayment: Using P0011 when the money is the return of an equity or debt investment rather than a loan you advanced, which belongs under P0001 or P0002.
  3. Code and document mismatch: The code not matching what your loan agreement describes, which flags the payment.
  4. Incomplete documents: Missing the loan agreement, proof of the original advance, or KYC, so the bank holds funds until provided.
  5. Missing PAN or KYC: Incomplete verification stops the bank from releasing the payment.
  6. Using an inward code for an outward payment: Applying a receipt code to money you're sending out instead of the matching outward code.
